The National Academy of Engineering has recognized T. Alan Hatton, MIT’s Ralph Landau Professor of Chemical Engineering Practice, Post-Tenure, as the recipient of the 2026 Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education, citing his transformative leadership of the Institute’s David H. Koch School of Chemical Engineering Practice. The award citation highlights his efforts to advance “an immersive, industry-integrated educational model that has produced thousands of engineering leaders, strengthening U.S. technological competitiveness and workforce readiness.”

The Gordon Prize recognizes “new modalities and experiments in education that develop effective engineering leaders.” The prize is awarded annually and includes a cash award to support the recognized innovation.

In his 36 years as director of ChemE’s Practice School, Professor Hatton modernized and adapted the over-100-year-old program, giving our students a unique and transformative education and experience fitting our modern society. On the research side, he has pioneered electrochemically mediated operations for water treatment and resource recovery, as well as for carbon dioxide removal from point sources, ambient air, and ocean waters. His laboratory has spun out two start-ups: Verdox, which develops electrochemical swing processes for CO2 capture, and was awarded a $1 million Elon Musk XPrize; and Mantel Capture, focused on exploiting molten salts for CO2 capture. Alan served as Faculty Lead on MITEI’s Carbon Management in the Future Energy Systems Center and previously served as co-chair of its Center on Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage.

Via Public Transportation

Boston’s public transportation system is the MBTA, known as “the T.”
Subway: From any terminal at Logan Airport, take the Silver Line bus to South Station. At South Station, change to the Red Line subway to Kendall/MIT (inbound toward Alewife). The ride should take about 30 minutes and is free.

Bus: The 64, 68, and 85 lines stop near the MIT Welcome Center. The #1 bus stops on Massachusetts Avenue, about a 15-minute walk from the Welcome Center.

From Logan Airport

Taxi or Rideshare: Taxi fare from the airport is about $35–$40, and a rideshare service can range from about $20–$35. During non-rush hour, the ride will take about 15 minutes; during rush hour, it may take 30 minutes or more.
