New ACS In Focus Digital Primer from Ariel Furst

March 12, 2026

Professor Ariel L. Furst has authored a new ACS In Focus digital primer, Electrochemically Active Microorganisms, co-written with Annette R. Rowe and published by the American Chemical Society.

The volume introduces readers to microorganisms capable of exchanging electrons with electrodes – an intriguing capability that underpins emerging technologies such as microbial fuel cells, bioelectronic sensors, and other bioelectrochemical systems that harness living cells to generate electricity or drive chemical reactions. The primer provides an accessible overview of this rapidly growing research area and its potential applications in sustainable energy, environmental remediation, and biotechnology.

Professor Furst’s contribution joins another ACS In Focus title authored by Professor Heather J. Kulik, Machine Learning in Chemistry, co-written with Jon Paul Janet. Together, these contributions highlight the breadth of expertise in the department—from bioelectrochemical systems to the rapidly expanding role of machine learning in chemical discovery.
